  Wilde Nicole / Separation Anxiety: Both Sides Now "Separation issues can be extremely challenging for trainers and owners alike. Many trainers are aware of standard protocols and approaches, but unless you have lived with a dog with this behavior problem, it is almost impossible to understand the owner’s everyday reality. Living with Sierra, a shelter dog who came with a deeply entrenched case of separation anxiety, has given me an insider’s perspective and has emphasized the fact that a cookie-cutter approach will not work for every dog. Along with a newfound empathy for owners, I have developed creative ways to address the problem and to support clients. This presentation includes lecture and video, and will cover: 1. How to accurately diagnose a separation issue, and how to differentiate separation anxiety from isolation distress. 2. Possible symptoms and their implications. 3. Root causes, including genetics and which breed groups are apt to have separation problems. We’ll also discuss how owners may influence separation issues. 4. A foundation program that should be carried out at home to give the dog the best chance of calm, even behavior across the board. 5. Creative management options, including what to do in an emergency. 6. The Alone Zone: The choice of where to leave the dog when owners are away can have a huge effect on the dog’s stress levels and the success of the program. We will also discuss what is not recommended and why. 7. Assessing if and when pharmacological intervention is appropriate, and two natural alternatives to consider. 8. Complementary therapies: Can DAP, music, body wraps, and flower essences help? 9. Separation anxiety myths will be examined. You might be surprised at some of the “accepted wisdom” that is simply untrue. 10. Could getting a second dog help? 11.
